Sexual abuse in nursing homes is a difficult topic to think about.  (It is even more difficult to write about.)  CNN has published a report about Nursing Home Sexual Abuse.  Studies show that only about 30% of all elderly sexual abuse victims over the age of 65 report the abuse to law enforcement.  Roughly 85% of elderly sexual abuse victims live in nursing homes or adult care facilities. There are no reliable statistics about the prevalence of sexual assault in South Carolina nursing homes but there was a recent report out of Monks Corner about a South Carolina employee who was alleged to have sexually assaulted a nursing home resident.  The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse has published information about sexual abuse of the elderly, including the signs of sexual abuse.  Nursing home residents need us to be informed, to be present, to pay attention, and to ask questions as often as we can to make sure they are protected against all forms of abuse.
